About Filmdex
Filmdex is a film-collecting site with one rule: a film joins your collection only after you pass a short quiz about it.
What is Filmdex
On most film sites you tick a box and a film counts as watched. On Filmdex you earn it: you watch the film, answer ten questions about it, and when at least seven answers are right it goes on your shelf with your score. Your collection becomes a record of what you have really seen, which you can share with friends.
Filmdex is free, has no ads and uses no analytics or advertising cookies. It is a personal project run by Emin Karaman.
How it works
The quiz gate
- Open a film and start its quiz: 10 multiple-choice questions, and you need 7 correct answers to pass.
- The quiz is graded on our server and the correct answers never reach your browser, so the only way through is knowing the film.
- An optional timer gives you 20 seconds per question (you can switch it off in Preferences); an attempt expires after 15 minutes.
- If you do not pass, you wait before trying the same film again: 10 minutes after the first unsuccessful attempt, 1 hour after the second and 24 hours after the third within a day. Leaving a quiz after answering a question counts as an attempt.
- Questions are written automatically from film information. If one looks wrong, report it from the quiz.
Badges
Badges mark milestones, such as your first collected film, 10 and 100 films, a perfect 10/10, films from five genres and 25 science-fiction films. You can see all of them on the Badges page.
Friends and recommendations
Add friends by username. Friends see each other's collections and activity, can recommend films to each other with a short note, and appear on a friends-only leaderboard. You can remove or block anyone at any time; they are not told.
Private by default
- New profiles are private: only you and your accepted friends see your collection, watchlist and badges. You can make your profile public in Settings.
- Your real name is shown only to you and your accepted friends; everyone else sees your username and initials.
- Your date of birth is used only for the age check, and your e-mail address is never shown to anyone.
- Profile pages ask search engines not to index them.
The details are in the Privacy Policy.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Filmdex free?
- Yes. There are no payments, subscriptions or ads.
- Why do I have to be 16?
- Filmdex has social features and stores personal data, so it is only for people aged 16 and over. Your date of birth is checked at sign-up.
- Who can see my real name?
- Only you and the people you have accepted as friends. Everyone else sees your username and initials.
- Can I change my username?
- Yes, under Edit profile on your profile, once every 30 days. Your old username stays reserved for you for 30 days and links to it lead to your new one.
- I failed a quiz. Can I try again?
- Yes, after a wait: 10 minutes after the first unsuccessful attempt, then 1 hour, then 24 hours if you keep trying the same film within a day.
- How do I download my data?
- Open your profile, go to Settings and choose “Download my data”. You get a JSON file with what we store about your account.
- How do I delete my account?
- Open your profile, go to Settings and choose “Delete account”, then confirm by typing your username and your password. Your account, collection, friendships, recommendations and uploaded photo are deleted at once; a few technical records (such as our sign-in provider's security log, kept for 30 days) and backups expire later, as the Privacy Policy explains.
- How do I report someone?
- Use the Report button on their profile, on their card in your friends list, or next to a recommendation they sent you. You can also write to supportfilmdex@gmail.com.
- Where do the films come from?
- From TMDB, a film database built by its community. Posters and images load directly from TMDB.
- Is Filmdex available in Turkish?
- The legal pages are available in English and Turkish. The rest of the site is in English for now.
Where the film data comes from
Titles, release dates, plot summaries, cast and crew, posters and backdrops come from TMDB (The Movie Database). Our server fetches film details from TMDB's API; posters and backdrops load in your browser directly from TMDB's image servers. Trailers play from YouTube, and only after you press Play.
Quiz questions are generated from this film information with Google's Gemini model (or, when Gemini is unavailable, an open model run by Groq). No information about you is sent to them.
Quiz questions also use plot summaries from Wikipedia, available under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 License (CC BY-SA 4.0). We store only the questions, not the Wikipedia text.
